Initial inspiration

THEME BOARDCOLOUR AND INSPIRATION BOARD
JUXTAPOSITION: I combined Indian batik, a fabric I’ve always loved, with leather, a material I was using for the first time. This pairing contrasted leather’s bold, rebellious nature with batik’s traditional charm. The leather added edge, while the batik grounded it, creating a balanced and unique garment.

The fusion of leather and Indian textiles is often used for bags and juttis, celebrating the intersection of tradition and modernity. Leather provides durability while Indian textiles—known for their patterns, colors, and cultural narratives. This combination creates a perfect balance of functionality and aesthetics.

ILLUSTRATION BOARD
Illustrations based on research helped me map out materials and determine silhouettes. I chose the first top for construction.

SPEC SHEET

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The pattern for the top is derived from a basic bodice pattern which was extracted by draping. The basic bodice pattern was then divided into two and extended along the centre front to create the pattern for a wrap top. For the fabric section, I started off with creating pin tucks and then cutting the fabric into the desired pattern.

GARMENT DESCRIPTION
The first leather garment I constructed, I wanted to have a garment i could have forever and matched my style. The wrap top allows for fluctuation in size and is a timeless piece. The wrap top is made using reddish-brown sheep nappa leather and batik print fabric in red and white. The fabric portion features pin tucks. Two ties are added onto both, the fabric and the leather portion.

INFERENCES
Creating my first-ever garment was a challenging yet rewarding experience. Navigating the complexities of pattern-making and construction, I underestimated the difficulty of ensuring the leather fit snugly against the body. This process taught me the importance of precise draping, as achieving a well-fitted leather garment requires meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
