PONDY POP
PROCESS
INSPIRATION
self clicked image that inspired pondy pop.
For our print design project, we were encouraged to choose an image, ideally one we had captured ourselves, as inspiration. I selected a photo I had taken during a visit to Parry’s Corner and Pondy Bazaar in Chennai. The vibrant colors in the scene caught my eye, presenting a unique challenge to step outside my comfort zone and create a print collection that embraces this palette.
INITIAL EXPLORATION I started by printing the image and using gateway sheets to capture the textures, shapes and lines in the images using just an ink pen and a fine tip green marker.
Then I broke down each element in the image- every dot, line, shape and form was documented onto one sheet and all foliage and irregular textures were socumented on another sheet. These served as a motif directory for me. I then finalised the colours to be used for the collection.

MANUAL EXPLORATIONS
Manual explorations were carried out using differnt coloured inks, watercolours as well as creating stamps using old erasers and the initial motif directory was used.
COORDINATE PRINTS
Each coordinate was created by scanning and manipulating a manual exploration using Photoshop.

MAIN PRINTS
Each main print was created using a combination of three to four coordinate prints developed.
MOCKUPS
Mockups were created to map the prints and understand their application. Each set of mock-ups featured a collection of 4 coordinates and 1 main print.
Application 1: Tote bags

Application 2: notebook covers
INFERENCES
Designing a print collection with colors outside my usual palette was both challenging and rewarding. I often doubted myself, tempted to revert to familiar tones like muted olive green or burnt orange. However, receiving compliments on the final prints validated my ability to step out of my comfort zone and create something distinctive within the given brief. This project was especially enjoyable, as it deepened my love for print design. The semester's unique classroom projects, each with a creative twist, kept me engaged and constantly learning something new; which I tried to apply while designing the final collection for this class.
