Photography: Elza Mohan GeorgeEMBROIDERY:Pansy flowers embroidered onto pigment finish goat leather using cotton embroidery threads. Running stitch, chain stitch and satin stitch were used to make this swatch. The leather was reinforced with microdot fusing before embroidery.WEAVING: Pink foil finish goat skin and green sheep nappa leather were cut into 1” wavy straps and woven together to create this swatch. Plain weave was used here.APPLIQUE: Alligators cut out of chrome tan goat white crust leather, hand painted and appliqued by hand onto brown sheep nappa leather usig running stitch. WEAVING:Red leather lace and green sheep nappa leather cut into straps and woven using a rib weave.
ETCHING: Crazy horse leather, heat plated and etched using a needle. Artwork: New zealand’s stamp for the goddess of health.
EMBROIDERY: Brown sheep nappa leather reinforced with microdot fusing and embroidered using back stitch, fly stitch, french knots, bead work and couching stitches. APPLIQUE: Leather scraps cut into shapes and appliqued onto green sheep nappa leather using a 60 tkt nylon thread. APPLIQUE: Leather scraps cut into tulips and appliqued onto brown sheep nappa leather using a 60 tkt nylon thread.
INFERENCES
This project allowed me to explore a variety of surface techniques of which some are displayed above. It was challenging to understand how various techniques could be practiced on leather as the material is much tougher than anything I had worked on previously. However, the results were extremely rewarding.
